With a 360 camera you can capture in every direction at once. Our recommended 360 camera, the relatively affordable GoPro MAX can be paired with a simple car mount to create an inexpensive best-practice Mapillary capture setup on wheels.
🧰Equipment needed
-
a 360 camera like the recommended GoPro Max
-
Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick 70cm tripod
-
GoPro tripod adapter (only needed for GoPro cameras)
-
GoPro tripod adapter (only needed for GoPro cameras)
📷Prepare the camera
Prior to mounting, you'll want to get everything on the camera in order, as its quite painful to take down the camera from your mount and make adjustments:
|
🚗Mounting your GoPro MAX
We like the durable Delkin Fat Gecko Triple Suction Camera Mount which is rated for up to 12lb (5kg) load capacity and comes with 3 suction cups to keep your 360 safe and secure even at high speeds.
-
Follow the instructions provided with the Fat Gecko mount to clean and dry the center of the roof of your car and the suction cups
-
Loosen all the knobs to adjust the angle of the suction cups and practice attaching the mount as described in the instructions
-
Position your mount such that the mounting stud is pointing vertically at a 90 degree angle with the ground
-
When you are ready, attach the camera to the fully-extended Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick 70cm (with the GoPro tripod adapter if you are using a GoPro camera) and then attach the selfie stick to the suction cup mount
-
The LCD screen of the camera should be facing the left or right of the car (to minimize wind resistance and improve image clarity for signage on the left and right sides of the street)
- Ensure your suction cup mount is secure by pushing down each suction cup and button and pulling the suction cup levers up as described in the Delkin instructions
📸Capture and upload
It's go time! Now that your 360 camera is securely mounted you can use the remote control or companion app to start recording when you are ready. Editing your capture afterwards is typically harder than doing a clean capture to begin with, so we recommend you only capture exactly what you want to upload.
As a precautionary measure, we recommend avoiding rapid acceleration/braking and sharp turns during your drive. You can also read about our recommended GoPro Max & Insta360 settings and find instructions for uploading your captures with the Mapillary Desktop Uploader at the bottom of those articles.
Happy Capturing!
