How can I upload imagery to Mapillary?

Mapillary lets anyone capture and upload street-level imagery that can then be used for extracting map data.

The simplest way to contribute images is to use the Mapillary mobile apps which let you both capture and upload conveniently with your phone. But you can also use other devices like action cams or 360° cams, as there are a number of other options for uploading imagery.

There are two main requirements for the images that you upload to Mapillary: location information (normally based on GPS) and timestamp. Both are stored in the EXIF data of the image (there are several options for geotagging your images). Mapillary supports different aspect ratios and but your images should be in landscape orientation.

Note. To ensure our service is fast and high-performing, we've set an upper limit of 108 MP to image resolution. If your imagery exceeds that, please reduce the resolution before uploading, otherwise it won't get processed.

Different ways to upload

• Our mobile apps for iOS and Android. Upload images straight from the Mapillary app when you’ve been capturing with your mobile phone.
• Desktop Uploader. A standalone desktop application for quickly and easily uploading large amounts of images that don't need customized processing.
• Mapillary Tools for the command line. For very large volumes of images to upload, and/or images taken outside the Mapillary app that require some extra processing (like adding geotags from an externally recorded GPS track), we have a collection of command line tools prepared.

We strongly suggest that you review and remove all bad-quality and/or sensitive images before upload. If something slips, it is possible to delete images post-upload, but doing it beforehand will always be quicker and more effective.

When you upload images, they will get connected with all other images so that you can navigate to other nearby images. Faces and license plates will be blurred. If the images in your sequence have enough overlap, our computer vision technology will create smooth transitions between them when you move from one images to the next.

It will take a bit of time until your uploads are fully processed (typically between 24-48 hours). You can monitor what you have pending in the processing pipeline via your feed, either in the mobile apps or your profile page in the web app.
