Note: The GoPro Fusion has been discontinued by GoPro as of 2019 and is no longer supported. We have left this page visible for those who still own this camera and would like information about it. We recommend upgrading to the GoPro MAX which is the successor to the GoPro Fusion.
Equipment needed
- GoPro Fusion
- Smartphone with GoPro app
- Charging cables
- Memory cards
- Power bank (battery pack)
- Mounting equipment*
Mounting
- Vehicle capture
- Charge your GoPro fully before embarking on a capture adventure or carry a power bank if your session will continue for more than 2 hours.
- Secure the GoPro Fusion 360 camera onto a vehicle suction mount or your vehicle’s roof rack system
- Place the camera close to the center of the vehicle with the LCD screen facing the back of the car. Adjust the angles of the mounts so that the camera’s lenses face the front and back of your vehicle.
- Remove objects obstructing camera view (vehicle antenna).
- Connect and secure external battery power.
- Walking capture
- Charge your GoPro fully before embarking on a capture adventure or carry a power bank if your session will continue for more than 2 hours.
- We recommend using a selfie stick when walking.
- You can either hold the stick in your hand or fasten it to a backpack in a steady, upright position.
- Be sure to keep the camera at least 30 cm above your head to minimize interference from your head.
Device setup and capturing
- Start with formatting the camera’s memory card (we suggest you do this before each Mapillary session).
- Follow the instructions for your specific camera, or use https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html overwrite format, not quick format option
- Make sure your camera battery is charging while you capture images.
- Use the following two buttons on the camera to navigate the interface:
- Mode button
- Hold for two seconds to turn off/on
- Press to scroll through menus
- Shutter button
- Press to begin image capture
- Press to select menu items
- Mode button
- Enable the following camera settings:
- Time Lapse Mode
- 0.5 second interval
- GPS and Wifi on
- Recommended: use the GoPro app to control image capture
- GoPro (iOS): Link to download
- GoPro (Google Play)*: Link to download
- *requires Android 5.0 and up
- The GoPro Fusion 360 can be used to capture without the GoPro app, but this limits its functionality.
- Download the GoPro app
- Connect your device to the GoPro’s wifi:
- On GoPro navigate to: Settings → Wireless → Connect→ GoPro App
- The screen will display CAM NAME and PASSWORD.
- In the app, select the camera icon to add a camera.
- Use the GoPro app to make sure the necessary settings are activated, preview the image perspective, and start capturing.
- When you feel you have captured enough imagery, stop the capture.
Note:
- Best practices for capturing:
- Avoid capturing at night and when it is actively raining or snowing.
- Avoid capturing too much of your vehicle hood, the sky, and the ground.
- Be sure to fully charge your device before capturing and charge it throughout the duration of your capture session.
Upload GoPro Fusion 360 camera imagery to Mapillary
- You must first prepare your GoPro Fusion imagery by stitching it (combining the image sequences) using GoPro Fusion Studio.
- Set the Video Codec to JPEG.
- Set the Video Resolution to 6K (5760 x 2880)
- Set the D.Warp (Parallax Compensation) to Off.
- Set the Framerate to 2.
- Note: *6K Resolution, the highest quality image output available, requires a high-end computer with a GPU. See minimum system requirements for Fusion Studio.
- Once your imagery is prepared in GoPro Fusion Studio, use the Mapillary Desktop Uploader to upload your imagery.
- Download the Desktop Uploader and run the file.
- Once you’ve installed the Desktop Uploader, open it and sign in with your Mapillary login credentials. You can’t use the application without signing in, so if you don’t have an account yet, be sure to first create an account.
- Drag and drop or browse for a folder that contains your images (to avoid errors, please make sure the folder name doesn't contain special characters).
- Note: You can’t add individual images, just folders. You can only add one folder at a time. However, the folders can contain subfolders—the uploader is capable of handling that.
- When you’ve added a folder, the images it contains will be pre-processed and you will see their locations displayed on the map. At this stage, the images are not yet uploaded.
- Note: If you’re trying to add a folder that contains images which have already been processed previously, the uploader will remember that and prompt you to resume the upload.
- Click on "Upload" to upload the imagery to Mapillary. It normally takes a few hours to process, after which you should be able to see your imagery on the Mapillary platform.
- For more help with the Desktop Uploader, see the respective article.

With a new computer I have had problems starting Gopro Fusion Studio. Do you have any ideas on how to solve that problem?
@Henrik Just navigate to the folder where you have the install Fusion Studio and rename libeay32.dll to something else (say, "libeay32.dll_"). The Fusion Studio will launch and suggest you to update the OS but just ignore this screen.
