What equipment do I need?
Getting started driving with Mapillary is easy, you only need three things, and there is a good chance you already have all of them.
- Your clean, properly maintained, registered, and insured vehicle (four wheels; no motorbikes at this time).
- Your iOS or Android device with at least 30 GB of free storage for every 4 hrs of drive time.
- A phone mount that attaches to your windshield/windscreen, mounting your phone in landscape orientation. The mount must allow your phone’s camera to capture the road ahead, free of obstructions
I have all my equipment. What’s next?
Once you have your vehicle, smartphone, and mount, log in to the Mapillary Driver app. When you have successfully logged in, please reach out to the Driver Operations team via email@example.com. We’ll add you to your project and offer you your first driving tasks.
Which Mapillary app should I be using?
When driving with Mapillary, all drivers will use the Mapillary Driver app. The driver app is available for Android phones in Google Play, and for iPhones in the App Store.
Note that Mapillary has another app available, called simply “Mapillary”. Make sure not to confuse the apps—what you need to use is the Mapillary Driver app. Any capture that you do with the other app is not eligible for compensation.
I’m ready to drive, but I don’t see any tasks in the Mapillary Driver app.
If you are ready to capture images but do not currently have any tasks, please reach out to the Driver Operations team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
When can I drive?
You will have the highest earnings when you drive more hours. But some of our drivers choose just a few hours during the day and on weekends to earn extra cash.
There are only two limitations:
- All driving must take place during daylight hours (you can’t capture great images at night, so all capture needs to happen during the day).
- You should never capture images when it is raining/snowing/hailing. If you need to use your windshield wipers, it is not a suitable time to drive.
What if I need help?

What are tasks?
Tasks in the Mapillary Driver app are areas on the map that you capture imagery in. In each task, your goal as a driver is to capture images on every public road within the task boundaries, and then upload those images to the Mapillary platform.
How long does it take to complete a task?
Tasks vary in size and complexity. Most tasks take drivers less than 4 hours to drive and capture images, while some of them might just take 15–30 minutes to complete.
Do I have to complete tasks in one driving session?
Tasks are designed so that you can start and complete a task on the same day, but it is not a requirement. Just remember to upload the images that you have captured when connected to home WiFi, regardless of the status of the task.
Why do I need to accept a task?
Mapillary offers tasks to drivers through the Mapillary Driver app. You can choose to accept or decline any task that has been offered to you. This way, we will know that you plan to capture images in that area.
Why would I decline a task?
If you are busy with other things or feel that a task is too far from your location, you are free to decline any task. We’ll offer you new tasks if and when available, so you can get driving again when it suits you.
What do I do if I have already accepted a task and want to now decline it?
At this time, please reach out to the Driver Operations team and let them know that you would like to decline a task that you have already accepted. Please include the task number in your email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
When do I submit a task?
Once you’ve driven all streets in the task area and uploaded all images you’ve captured to the Mapillary platform, it’s time to use the Driver app to submit the task for review.
Do I need to complete a task before uploading images?
Upload images whenever you are connected to home WiFi, even if you haven’t completed the whole task yet. The more storage space you have free on your phone, the easier it is to keep capturing images when you are on a roll.
Why don’t I see any tasks?
Task availability depends on mapping priorities. If you haven’t been available to drive for some time, tasks may be offered to active drivers. If you are ready to drive again but have no tasks, contact us via email@example.com.
If you haven’t checked the Mapillary Driver app in quite some time (more than one week), the project may have been completed. The good news is that when new projects open up, Mapillary reaches out to drivers who have been successful and active in the past to offer them new tasks.
What can you tell me about my earnings?
Mapillary offers a fixed hourly rate to drivers. During the application process, you’ll learn more about the specific rate in your area.
Once you’ve started driving, you’ll be able to see a summary of your driving time in the Mapillary Driver app (including the details on your earnings).
When am I being paid?
Payments are regularly sent out the week after completed tasks have been approved for payment.
How am I being paid?
We pay drivers by direct deposit to their bank accounts.
Can I drive with Mapillary as my full-time job?
Driving with Mapillary is flexible and a great way to supplement your income. Mapping projects are completed as efficiently as possible. This means that opportunities to drive may arrive in short bursts, or other times extend over months: the availability of driving tasks depends on the demand for new map data in the area.
