Introduction to Mapillary

Mapillary empowers anyone to capture their own street-level imagery and understand places better with help of our computer vision technology. All Mapillary images can be used for exploring and extracting data from street-level imagery.

To get started with capturing your own street-level images, you need a smartphone, action camera or 360° camera. Your task is to capture sequences of images—that is what enables our technology to do 3D reconstructions and collect useful geospatial data from the images. With Mapillary, you can put any place on the map, the power is in your hands and you don't need to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Capture images

The easiest way to start capturing your own images is to use your smartphone, but you can also use an action camera or 360° camera. If you have not installed the Mapillary app, get it for free in App Store or Google Play.

You can capture images while walking, cycling, or driving. The main point when capturing is to keep on moving and to try and hold the camera itself still. Point the camera in the direction of travel and take many images (more than 10) in one sequence. Please take a look at our guide for great capturing.

Explore places

Within just a couple of hours after uploading, your contribution will be accessible to you and anyone else to explore on Mapillary. 

Computer vision technology will create smooth, enjoyable transitions between the images (as long as they have enough overlap), and figure out where your images stand in relation to other people's, so you can navigate between different sequences. For privacy, faces and license plates will be automatically blurred.

There are a few options on how to let others explore your images.

• Share a link simply by copying and pasting it somewhere, like in an email or text message.
• Share on a social network by using a social network icon (Facebook, Twitter, or Google+).
• Embed on your website or blog.
• Integrate with your app using our API and the MapillaryJS library.

Extract map data

You can use Mapillary to edit maps or geospatial datasets by using street-level imagery as a visual guide for reference or extract map data in standard geospatial formats. You can search for information on the Mapillary web app with the filter function or integrate Mapillary into your product using our developer tools.
